UNIVERSITY OF CAMBRIDGE
RESEARCH STUDENTSHIPS IN ENGINEERING
Applications are invited for two fully-funded PhD studentships in
engineering. The studentships will be for three years, starting from 1
October, 2000. University and College fees will be paid, together with a
maintenance award of £7000. Applicants must be resident in the UK or EU.
MICROMECHANICS OF ASPHALT DEFORMATION
This project is concerned with the permanent deformation and creep of
non-linear viscoelastic composites. It will involve laboratory
experiments, computer modelling of test specimens and finite element
modelling of the material in engineering applications. The project will
provide an opportunity to develop fundamental materials science and apply
it to practical engineering problems.
Applicants should have (or expect to obtain) a first class or 2.1 degree in
Engineering, Materials Science or Physics, with a background in materials
or solid mechanics.
COMPUTER-CONTROLLED VEHICLE SUSPENSIONS
This project is concerned with computer-controlled suspension systems for
heavy goods vehicles. It is a balanced combination of mechanical and
electrical engineering, design, theory, simulation and field-testing. It
will involve close collaboration with a number of industrial partners from
the Heavy Vehicle industry.
Applicants should have (or expect to obtain) a first class or 2.1 degree in
Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, ideally with an interest in Dynamics,
Vibrations and/or Control.
