Compaction is an important phase of pavement and rail track construction.
Many developments have been observed for several decades, with the
applications of vibratory compaction. And embarked devices are more and
more sophisticated to help the compaction management.
Embankment, subgrade, and unbound materials properties are essential for
the quality and the durability. Low costs during life-time may be the
result of a better knowledge.
AIMS
· To provide engineers, researchers, contractors and owners worldwide in
the field of compaction a forum of up-dated contributions on the following
themes (ETC 11) :
- Theory of compaction : theoretical analysis and computer models
- Practice of compaction : continuous compaction control
- Relationship between the parameters of compaction control and the
ulterior behaviour of structures
· To point out the needs for future development.
· To promote co-operation in research as well as in quality
management on
sites.
· To enhance discussions through a multi-partners points of view :
administrations, universities, manufacturers, contractors.
PROGRAMME
General reports will be made on the three subjects mentioned above, as a
synthesis of contributions of authors. It is expected that news
developments, recent evaluations in field, modelling, laboratory tests
results, in relation with compaction process and specifications, will be
reported, such as to bring the state of the art. The general reports will
be prepared and presented by selected specialists of international standing
invited by the Scientific Committee;
Some very interesting papers can be selected by the general reporter for a
shortly oral presentation by their authors, complementary to the general
reports, and a large time for discussion will follow each of the three
subjects.
LANGUAGE
Official languages of the workshop are French and English. Simultaneous
translations will be provided during the sessions.

SCIENTIFIC COMMITTEE
The themes of the workshop are related with the terms of référence of the
European Technical Committee ETC11 "Geotechnical Aspects in Design and
Construction of Pavements and Rail Track".
The Scientific Committee is constituted under the authority of :
· Mr H. BRANDL (Austria), Vice-President for Europe of the ISSMGE.
· Mr A. GOMES CORREIA (Portugal), Chairman of ETC 11 of ISSMGE.
· Mr JF. CORTE (France), Technical Director of " Laboratoire Central des
Ponts et Chaussées ".
PAPERS
Authors are invited to submit abstracts of about 200 words in French and
English, on any topics relevant to the workshop themes.
A one page abstract with paper title, authors names, affiliation, mailing
address, telephone and facsimile numbers and E-mail address should be
provided at the top of the page.
Abstracts should clearly state the purpose and conclusions of the full
papers. Both abstracts and papers will be reviewed by the General reporters
and Scientific Committee. The deadline to submit abstracts is 15 th
November 1999.
The scientific committee will mention to the authors the acceptation of
their paper by December 15 th 1999, and then full papers, written in
English or in French, will be required by March 1 st 2000.
PROCEEDINGS
The proceedings are going to be published by ENPC ?, including general
reports. The volume will be provided with registration on the 19 th May 2000.
POSTERS
Space will be provided for authors to display posters during coffee break
and at the end of the day.
EXHIBITION
The workshop takes place during INTERMAT, the french exhibition of
construction equipments, at the Parc des Expositions of VILLEPINTE between
16 th and 21 st May 2000. VILLEPINTE and MARNE-LA-VALLEE are both situated
in the North-East surrounding of PARIS, each of them 45 mn from the center.
Compaction equipment firms, consultants, universities, ... will be present
at INTERMAT. Some privileges contacts for participants may be organised at
Villepinte on 18 th or 20 th May. Further details will be given under request.
