Dear all
Dianne Stilwell, Chair of STEMPRA, has flagged this up on the STEMPRA
mailing list :
The House of Commons Science and Technology Committee have agreed to inquire
and examine the impact of the 1993 White Paper Realising Our Potential: A
Strategy for Science, Engineering and Technology. A press release giving
details can be found at
http://www.parliament.uk/commons/selcom/s&tpnt25.htm
We all remember this one - it was the white paper that made communicating
science respectable - and gave the Bodmer report-induced bandwagon a very
hefty shove.
The 1993 White Paper, on the organisation of science, engineering and
technology policy across Government, introduced several changes and
initiatives, including support for a campaign aimed at attracting more of
our best people into SET studies and careers, and raising public awareness
of the contribution of science, engineering and technology .
STEMPRA will, hopefully, be submitting a written response and oral evidence
has already be given by Professor Sir William Stewart, former Chief
Scientific Adviser to the Government. See the above Web site for details on
how to
contribute your own/organisation's response. The deadline for evidence is
12 June.
(The hard copy of the original report is available for reference in the
Information Service ! Published in 1993, it's fallen out of the time scale
for the http://www.official-documents.co.uk/menu/bydate.htm Stationery
Office's embryonic full-text
publications Web site)
All the best
Karen John-Pierre
