single and folk music and milkbars and beauty slept a hundred years and
never woke and no cloaked dark stranger came to wake at seventeen and when I
woke I dreamt of open doors to open words and if the window fits it splits
two books into one to lines of poems written into words for words are voice
and voice displays one’s worth in a warped city filled with materialism
insecurity in the workplace and if you don’t sign the workplace agreement
you’re out on the streets left with nothing but a compendium of words no one
pays for anymore but the moral issues remain do the right thing by your
fellow man and here in this land I walk amongst the larks the doves the
magpies the bush and pines and kangaroos with joeys in their pouch as if
spring stands still and try as I will I will spend the penultimate hour of
my days inside a word a phrase a language a voice I never had and if I had
it lay somewhere between the sheets of marriage the babies crying the get me
to the dance lesson little athletics on time otherwise the coach will smart
at words my mother doesn’t have any money only money that she finds in coat
pockets rattling around the bottom of the washing machine too tired silly
woman gets her hands caught in the wringer wrings her hands at the shopping
piling up not enough coins in the purse send something back make it the meat
and sugar but not the pencils not the books not the school coat not the
wagon wheel half chewed in the shopping trolley should be money tree where
in its shade of age when security comes with a book and pen and the
electricity works and the family four by one comes and the second motor has
manual gears and gets me to meet a mind that always slept and suddenly wakes
from a folklore world of babies knitting cleaning fridge achieving achieving
achieving if the shoe shines it fits and I wish I was a single girl again
