Subject: Looking for Phd/Research in Textile Design
I am looking for people who has finished a Phd or is in the middle of
getting on in any area of Textile Design.
I am a Danish Textile Designer living and working in San Francisco.
I have been offered a Phd grant from one of the 2 Danish design Colleges.
To my knowledge this is the first time money has been given to
research in design in Denmark, and it would be the first Phd. For
that reason there isn't really any one in Denmark I can ask about
anything. I think the plan is that I am going to meet with people
from RCA and the design school in Finland, who has research, and if
there is any other interesting places in Europe.
I have worked with computer and textile designs for over 10 years and
have recently developed patterns for DUPONT for testing in digital
printers, but I also work with weaving mills where everything is done
electronically. The overall area for the research is Digital Textiles
and Interactive Media. I have started research here in the US at
conferences and different for digital printing, software, weaving
etc. My plan was to spend the fall to narrow down the area I think
the research should be about, at this point is is rather open, better
color management software, better ways to simulate fabric qualities,
how to feel a texture from the computer etc etc...........
I have not finally accepted moving back to Denmark in September to do
the Phd, because I feel I need more information. It is important for
me, that there still will be a big part of designing and
experimenting in the research process. I don't want it to be to "dry"
, but at the same time it is important for me that the project will
end up being something new and different for the industry.
All input and sharing of experiences will be highly appreciated, also
if you field is not textiles design, since the process is the same
for every area.
Best regards,
-Helle Abild
