Special Issue: Decision-making in Networked Environment
(http://144.122.13.7/~ijie)
Guest Editors:
Omer S. Benli, Bilkent University
and
Cemal Akyel, METU
Aim:
New information technologies will continue to have profound effect on
how business is done. In the 1980's, the technological environment was
limited to computers as stand alone units whereas the 21st-century
work environment encompasses Internet and the integrated technologies
of control, communication, and information. This networked environment
has drastically increased the speed and improved the accuracy of
information available for decision making. These developments must be
taken into consideration while designing systems for managing
production of goods and services.
IE/OR techniques and concepts provide means for analysis and
improvement of managerial decision processes. Yet their use in
practice is not extensive. The recent approaches that are practically
viable only in a networked environment, such as Web-based ERP systems,
publicly accessible Internet-based optimizers and decision support
systems, and Internet-based dynamic encyclopedias, will facilitate
further acceptance of IE/OR tools and techniques by the professional
community worldwide.
>From another perspective, the evolving nature of business processes in
networked environments, in particular as to their contents, delivery
methods, time spans, and organizational aspects, necessitates certain
changes in the way conventional IE/OR tools and techniques are to be
utilized.
This special issue aims to initiate a research agenda of issues
related with industrial engineering applications and practice in this
new networked environment.
Scope:
We solicit papers reporting recent research on innovative applications
and system implementations, as well as surveys and theoretical
analyses of related issues.
Papers are sought on, but not limited to, IE/OR applications and
practice utilizing Internet technologies, such as
* Web based systems for managing enterprises,
* Design of tracking/dispatching/routing systems,
* E-Commerce systems design and operation,
* Solving IE/OR problems remotely over the Internet,
* Solving hard problems by network computing, and
* Web based IE/OR education.
Submission Guidelines:
All submitted papers will be refereed according to the usual IJIE
(http://utminers.utep.edu/afuentes/ijie/) refereeing process. Accepted
papers must be prepared using IJIE author instructions
(http://utminers.utep.edu/afuentes/ijie/authorinfo.html).
Electronic submissions are encouraged. They can be sent as one email,
MIME attachments being allowed, to either one of the guest
editors. The message should contain: (i) the abstract and author
name(s) and address(es) in ASCII, and (ii) the entire paper in
PostScript or PDF. (PostScript version must be interpretable by
GhostScript, and must use standard fonts or the necessary fonts must
be included.)
Authors who cannot meet these requirements can submit 3 hard copies by
post to either one of the guest editors.
To aid planning and organization, an email or a letter of intent to
submit a paper will greatly aid our planning and organization. Please
include author information, and tentative title and abstract.
Deadline for submission: 31 December 2000
