EU CLUSTER COOLING NETWORK
PhD positions are available within this network. Some positions are for
completing the entire period of graduate studies in the host group.
Other short-term (1-2 year) exchange positions
are possible in cooperation with the candidates home university.
CLUSTER COOLING (2000 -2004)
Delayed Ionisation and Competing Cooling Mechanisms in Atomic Clusters
funded by the European Commission in the framework of the research
and technological development programme "Improving the Human Research
Potential and the Socio-economic Knowledge Base"
(Fifth Framework Programme of the European Community).
Scientific co-ordinator: Prof. Eleanor E.B. Campbell, Goeteborg
The overall objective of the CLUSTER COOLING network is to obtain a
detailed understanding of the fundamental dynamical processes that occur
in energy-rich atomic clusters where the excitation energy exceeds the
energy required for electron emission. Atomic clusters such as
fullerenes
and metal clusters will be used as relatively simple model systems where
the relevant properties can be changed in a controlled and systematic
way.
The young scientists employed will get a thorough education and training
in the use of a range of state-of-the-art experimental techniques
(including ultrashort pulsed lasers, "table-top" storage rings, cluster
sources,
mass spectrometry, imaging techniques)and the application of
theoretical modelling. Each successful applicant will be expected to
spend some time in a partner laboratory other than that of his/her host
group
and will be expected to take an active participation in the Network
Workshops
and in presenting the results of the Network to a wider audience.
Candidates with a background in chemical physics, physical chemistry or
atomic and molecular physics are sought.
An extensive description of the programme can be found on the website:
http://fy.chalmers.se/~mheden/eccn.htm
Under the terms of the programme, the young researchers who are
successful applicants for the supported positions must be aged 35 years
or less, and must be nationals of a Community Member State or an
Associated
State (Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, the Republic of Cyprus,
Estonia,Hungary, Iceland, Israel, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania,
Norway, Poland, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia). The young researchers
must
not be nationals of the state in which the participant appointing them
is
established, and must not have carried out their normal activities in
that
state for more than 12 of the 24 months prior to their appointment.
The Project will start no later than October 1st, 2000, with
postdoctoral appointments being made within the 4 years of the project
duration. Each Postdoctoral appointment is for 1-2 years.
Some predoctoral/ postgraduate appointments are also available
