NEWS FROM THE HEALTH DEVELOPMENT AGENCY (HDA)
The HDA has three major roles:
1. Building the evidence base(and identifying gaps) to support and
improve public health
2. Advising on setting standards including sharing good practice and
providing guidance
3. Advice to support training and development for those involved in
improving the health of the public
The health of black and minority ethnic groups will be an integral part of
this work. At present there is evidence on the main health conditions which
disproportionately affects black and minority ethnic groups such as
coronary heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, mental health, haemoglobin
disorders. but very little on what works and what is effective in improving
peoples health. Also local response in addressing the health needs of BMEGs
tends to be patchy.
Current HDA work specific or inclusive for BMEG's
* Autumn Launch of Evidence Base, 2000 - Evidence into practice
website and database for health professionals. The first ever website
providing latest evidence of what works
* Inputting into the development of National Service Framework for
Diabetes on the prevention and early detection aspects
* Providing the evidence base for local intervention for the
Implementation of Prevention Aspects of the National Service Framework for
Coronary heart Disease
* Support to Black and Minority Ethnic Groups through the development
in partnership with The 1990 Trust ( a national voluntary sector
organisation working with BMEGs) of a website and database on health.
* Dissemination of research report on Tobacco use among Black and
Minority Ethnic groups
* Dissemination of two Health and Lifestyle surveys of Black and
Minority Ethnic groups in England produced by the former Health Education
Authority earlier this year
* Production of a combined summary of the above two Health and
lifestyle survey reports of Black and Minority Ethnic Groups in England
* Providing advice to the Health of Londoners Project Health of
ethnic Minority elders in London

Hope this is helpful
