Hi All,
to have new read codes created one contacts NHSCCC at Loughborough I think,
http://www.coding.nhsia.nhs.uk
The process is not as simple as it could be though the staff are first rate.
If your organisation is not already, you need to become a read code licensee.
This doesn't cost and is a short form filling process.
Then you fill in a change request form, again a little complicated and submit the codes. They will contact you within a month and a month later you will receive your codes.
These codes are released to software suppliers in September and March and after 1-2 months turnaround time will appear on all clinical systems in primary care around the country. However there is nothing to stop you using your new codes before the release date. The new codes are 99.9% likely to stay the same but it is only when they are released in A september /March update that they are finally set in stone.
If you are submitting many codes for creation, it may be easier to submit them in a pipe delimited file. But this is a whole new can of worms!
So check out the website, any problems get back to me,
Good Luck

Ben,
I received your e-mail re census codes from one of the PCG's here in east London. What I was really interested in however was your refernce to the service provided by the nhsccc. We need to develop read codes for mental health for a project we are working on down here - you may or may not be familiar with this branch of codes but at the moment they are totally inappropriate to the recording of mental health issues. I would like to know who you direct your requests for code development to and any experiences or insight you can provide in terms of getting code requests accepted. We would be grateful for any help.
We do use the census codes for ethnicity for all our major chronic disease management recording including CHD, raised blood pressure, diabetes, asthma and mental health. We have had to create local codes for some categories as their is variation between the localities of east London and great diversity within each locality. I'd be happy to share anything weve done down here.
Regards
