Hi List -
Sometime about 1958-9 whilst working at Silksworth Colliery, near
Sunderland, in the north-east of England, I was involved in conducting two
parties, each of six trainee nurses, on a visit underground. The guides for
the party were the colliery Safety Officer, a Foreman Mechanic and Myself as
Foreman Electrician. Each party was taken on a visit to a longwall coal
face about four feet high, approximately 1,600 feet underground and located
about one and a half miles from the shaft. The visit lasted almost four
hours. The visitors were accepted by the workforce without any problems
whatever, unlike the experience related by Tony Brewis. At that time
trainee nurses in Sunderland were taken on a few visits into industry as a
part of their training.
