Paul (Edgehill) & all on the list
I think a definitive list of mining terms is a really good idea, but its
probably almost impossible to compile a DEFINITIVE list. I say this because
in different regions of the UK, let alone in other parts of the world, the
same word is often used for several different meanings. Also it depends on
what period in mining history you want to cover, as evidenced by the
discussions on these copper terms. So it would be a really good forum to
start all sorts of arguments / discussions.
I have two books that I often refer to for definitions:
Derbyshire Lead Mining Glossary by Nellie Kirkham CRG Publication No 2 April
1949
A glossary of Mining Terms edited by WG Orchard Dyllansow Truran 1990
These both refer to other glossaries, one published in 1843, so there is
plenty of source material out there just to be typed up. One of these also
has several diagrams that describe how various things work too. Also lots of
mining books have a list of their own in the back, so there is a mine of
information already out there.
If anyone has got the time and inclination to take on the compilation of a
glossary of mining terms, I would be very interested to see the end result!
Anyone interested in compiling the definitive list?? I am sure there are
also several lists already on the internet, but I haven't looked for them.
What other glossaries / dictionaries of mining terms do list members have??
Incidentally neither of the two books quoted above include definitions of
any of the smelting terms in John Symons email of yesterday evening (i.e.
regulus, copper cake, rosette copper, and blister copper).
Roger Gosling
PS If you have read this far, here's a question for list members:
What does Zyghyr mean?
A pint of Boddingtons Bitter to the first correct answer. I will be in my
local later this evening to buy it for the winner!
