Look, old gas works is what I know about. while I'm sure you're right
about domestic coal nevertheless there are several more there than
St.Pancras and its well known holders.
Holloway Road - don't know
New Kent Road - not by that date although there had been a works off
Blackfriars Road
Great Portland Street - no
Notting Hill - Great Western Works top of Ladbroke Grove (gas holder is
still there! - is it the one shown in the background of Sky's TV's 'Time
Gentleman Please')
Essex Road - no not obvious
Roman Road - several in the area although not very near by that date
Amelia Street -not that near
Fulham Road - Imperial's Fulham Gas Works at Sands End still there - see
interesting housing now tarted up at Imperial Square
Old Kent Road - two gas holders including George Livesey's revolutionary
No.13 still on site
St.John's Wood -no
Wilton Road - Pimlico gasworks was on the site of the Tachbrook estate
Wandsworth Road - Wandsworth gas works were just off wandsworth road
kentish Town - don't know
Cornwall terrace - where was that in Harrow Road - several along the
length of the road but mainly, probably Ladboke Grove (see above)
City Road - no
Goswell Road - second gas works in the world (1813) and Transco are
still on site. Very interesting old site which should be better known
Walworth Road - well, no.
I am not proving anything here but pointing out a few co-incidences. Gas
works carried out a considerable trade in domestic coke bought at the
door - perhaps similar trades were near each other
Mary
ps St.Pancras gas holders may be pretty and well known but they are
nothing compared to some of the others. I can see George Livesey's East
Greenwich No.1. from my window (next to the Dome and more derided than
the Dome) biggest in the world and extending the construction principles
of Old Kent Road 13.
