I could be barking up the wrong tree but your relative could have been a
'curver' (poss sic). A curver was basicaly a hewer (coal getter) the curve
or curf was the cut made at the base of the coal face with the hand pick,
known as 'holeing or mining' in other parts.
The holing was made as far as he could reach under the coal then the
remaining jud was either blown down or brought down with wedges. However,
curver was a word used to describe hewers in the Great Northern Coalfield.
