Hi, I'm a student midwife, well as of tommorrow I will be qualified. In my
class at college there was a male midwife who appeared to be well accepted
by the women he cared for. During my course I had the opportunity to talk
to women, in my care about their feelings towards being looked after by
men, many were fairly open to it and one woman had previously be looked
after by a man and felt that he was more compassionate and caring towards
her than any female midwife she had meet, she put this down to the fact
that he was never going to experience childbirth personally and therefore
cared more. I used to think that you had to have had a baby yourself to be
a midwife but the course has changed that opnion, every woman is
different, every experience is different and therefore it doesn't
particularly help the woman when you say "I know what you are going
through, therefore male or female it doesn't matter as long as you have
the skills, knowledge and compasssion to do the job
