Just wanted to introduce myself .. though I know a few of you! I am Dana
Sidney, an American who trained as a midwife in London and then practiced
for three
years within an independent midwifery group. I am now back in school to
convert my qualification to CNM so I can work in all sorts of ways in the
US, back here at home in New York. My focus right now is
developing a community project for a fellowship I have been awarded - I
will either be forming a prenatal/parenting group for adolescent mothers
in northern Manhattan (Harlem/Washington Heights) or starting up a program
much like what I saw in London around HIV management in pregnancy - ie
midwifery care throughout. I'm doing the footwork to see which there is
more of a need for in this neighborhood.
So far, I am pretty shocked at what I have seen of birth in the States,
though I know, this is New York, and said to be extreme.
Looking forward to participating.
Dana
