PRIZE ANNOUNCEMENT (please cross-post and mount on appropriate websites)
4/14/2000
The 2000 Forum for the History of Science in America Prize will be awarded
for a first book in the history of American science by a scholar not more
than ten years beyond the date of receipt of the Ph.D. (an author granted the
Ph.D. in 1990 would be eligible for the 2000 prize). To be eligible, the
book must have been published in English within the three years previous to
the prize year, i.e., 1997, 1998, or 1999. The subject area--history of
North American science--is defined to include Canada, Mexico, the
Caribbean, and the United States. Authors may nominate themselves.
The Prize will be presented at the Forum's annual meeting at the History of
Science Society meeting, Vancouver, 2-5 November, 2000. The 1998 book prize
was awarded to Mark Barrow, for A Passion for Birds: American Ornithology
after Audubon (Princeton UP, 1998). The Forum's essay prize (given in
alternate years) was awarded in 1999 to Michael Aaron Dennis, for
"Historiography of Science: An AmericanPerspective, " in __Science in the
Twentieth Century__, ed. John Krige and Dominique Pestre (Harwood Academic
Publishers, 1997).
Please send nominations for the Forum Prize--including one copy of the book,
full bibliographic information, and the date of the author's Ph.D.
--directly to EACH of the three prize committee members. Nominations must
be sent out by June 1, 2000. For more information, please email any of the
prize committee members.
