OPPORTUNITIES IN SCIENCE POLICY
Starting salary range stlg20,910 - stlg25, 000
The Royal Society is the independent scientific academy of the UK, dedicated
to promoting excellence in science. Its Science Advice Section deals with
both policy for science and the scientific aspects of public policy,
nationally and internationally. Responsibilities include: providing
briefings; conducting policy studies, research projects and short studies;
and providing information for various inquiries and public statements. We
have created two new managerial posts, the details for each post are as
follows:
Manager, Science Policy (Ref: SAS11)
The post holder will take the lead and be responsible for developing
projects in respect of environmental and energy policy. Familiarity with
current issues in environmental policy (from biodiversity to climate
change), is essential as is an interest in energy issues and how the two
subject areas interrelate. The post-holder
will also monitor developments in risk assessment and the precautionary
principle and familiarity with either of these would be advantageous.
Manager, Science Policy/Wellcome Fellow (Ref: SAS12)
The post-holder will take the lead and be responsible for developing various
projects and activity areas in line with the objectives of the Society and
the Trust, particularly in respect of biomedicine, biotechnology and ethics.
The post-holder will be employed by the Royal Society and report to the
Director of Science Policy, but will work closely with the Wellcome Trust
and spend some time each month working in the Trust's Policy Unit to the
Head of Policy. S/he will also organise an annual joint Society/Trust
seminar on science policy.
Applicants for both posts should have a science or engineering degree and
experience either in a relevant research field, or in a related policy area.
Project and staff management experience are essential. Applicants will be
expected to portray their enthusiasm and energy through excellent
communication skills and have the ability and commitment to take projects
forward creatively.
