The Newcomen Society is the leading UK society for studying the history of
engineering and technology. It has about 1200 members and runs an extensive
programme of events including public lectures (in London and its regional
branches), conferences and visits. It publishes the twice yearly
_Transactions_, the _Bulletin_ (which comes out three times a year) and
occasional special publications. The Society also plays a consultative role
on issues relating to the preservation of important sites of engineering
heritage. The Society, which is a registered charity, is run by an elected
Council. The main officers of the Society are the President, two
Vice-presidents, and the Treasurer. They, together with the editors of the
Society's publications and chairs of the committees of Council, undertake
much of the work involved in running the Society.
The Society is seeking to appoint an Executive Secretary on a permanent
basis from 1 October 2000 or as soon as possible thereafter. The position
is a part time one of twenty-four hours per week spread over a mutually
agreed number of days.
The ideal candidate should have excellent communications skills with
members and officers of the Society and the administrative skills required
to run the day to day operations of a small learned society including the
servicing of the Council and some of the committees. The successful
candidate will also manage the Society's office which is staffed largely by
volunteers. IT skills are essential but the Society would provide training
in the various software packages it uses. The post will be based at the
Society's office located at Blythe House, near Olympia station, but there
is some scope for home working.
Those interested in this position should contact the retiring Executive
Secretary, Mr Raymond Layard (Newcomen Society, Science Museum, Exhibition
Road, London, SW7 2DD; 'phone/fax 020 7371 4445; e-mail
[log in to unmask]) for a copy of the job description. Applications
including a cv and the names and addresses of two referees should reach me
at the same address by 18 September. Interviews will probably be held in
late September.
The Newcomen Society conforms to the equal opportunity requirements of UK
and EU law.
