Modern Culture and the Mass Media
This investigates how contemporary cultures have developed in relation
to the
changes brought about by industrialisation and the growth of capitalism
,
with an emphasis on the emergence of the mass media and new
technologies of
communication. It considers how these relate to new ways of thinking
and
living. It includes the global dynamics of cultural change as well as
the
history of British culture.
Environmentalism and the Media
This will study the relation between culture and nature through a
critical
examination of media representations of environmental issues, their
forms and
their social functions. Examples of the genres and topics for analysis
are
ethnographic film and the representation of First Peoples 'in' nature,
natural history documentaries, the 'ecodrama', the leaflets and web
sites
produced by environmental organisations like Greenpeace or Friends of
the
Earth.
Video Documentary
This is a production course which develops students’ ability to
produce their
own documentary videos. The course requires students to draw on their
theoretical studies in cultural and media studies in order to produce
critically reflective work.
Urban Cultures
This module combines a study of urban cultures as they are represented
in
popular culture, and in film in particular, with a study of lived
experience.
The ‘cultural geography’ of cities considers the social and
political
significance of our deployment of urban space, drawing on the work of
theorists such as Simmel and Lefebre.
