Dear All
Paul Miller has discovered some quirks with JISCmail, which I thought
would be worth forwarding to this list. Apologies for the
duplication to those of you who also subscribe to the interoperability
list.
Another oddity, which I am trying to fix, concerns the header for this
group, which earlier this week read something along the lines of "The
Museum Computer Group is a forum for muse". I removed that, which was
attached to every posting, but now we seem to be stuck with "No title
defined". I have tried to fix that, so this message is also a test.
Apologies for cluttering up your mailboxes with more JISCmail-related
nonsense!

Subject: Two oddities with the new mailing list system
All,
as I mentioned previously, this mailing list transferred from the old
Mailbase service to the new JISCMail over the weekend.
On the whole, this transition has gone smoothly, but I have noted a couple
of oddities.
- The one most likely to confuse/confound is the fact that you probably
aren't receiving copies of any messages you post to the list. This is
different from the way Mailbase used to work.
To fix it, if you want to, send a message to
[log in to unmask]
which reads
SET * NOACK REPRO
--
Intuitive, eh?
This will change things so that, instead of receiving a little message to
tell you the message was posted to the list, you see the posting itself,
same as everyone else.
The '*' means that it will apply this change across EVERY JISCMail list of
which you are a member.
- The second glitch-ette is that the URLs of web pages haven't moved over
smoothly. Under Mailbase, mailing lists had web pages at addresses like
www.mailbase.ac.uk/lists/dc-general/ and www.mailbase.ac.uk/lists/uk-meg/.
The new URLs take the form www.jiscmail.ac.uk/lists/dc-general.html and
www.jiscmail.ac.uk/lists/uk-meg.html.
For more documentation on the new system, see
http://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/docs/default.htm.
Paul
ps: for any of you who happen to own a JISCMail list (this doesn't apply to
most of you, I know), you might not have spotted that JISCMail is set up NOT
to send you copies of mail to your lists. I own 40-odd, and spent some time
feeling relieved at how quiet they had all gone...! So far as I can tell,
the only solution is to join each of your lists, so that you are on them
both as an owner and a member. To do this for 40 lists is a real pain, let
me tell you! :-(
