Dear Andreas,
I hope you got my email confirming the holdings of the Calcutta Habl
al-matin in my 1985 catalogue: "Union Catalogue of Persian Serials &
Newspapers in British Libraries"
Now that I am back at work after the Easter break, I have had a chance
to look at my notes on Habl al-matin which I compiled while
researching the India Office Records for an article: 'The Persian
newspaper Habl al-matin' which was published in the India Office
Library and Records & Oriental manuscripts and Printed Books
newsletter no 32, 1984, pp 1-3.
There I traced the history of the Calcutta-based Habl al-matin, in
particular the history of its relations with the British, from the
time it was first printed in December 1893 until Jalal al-Din's death
in 1930. I used files mostly in the Political and Secret Department,
but also 'Indian newspaper reports, Bengal, 1894-1916' (India Office
Records L/R/5/20-24) which include an extensive series of translated
extracts
I realise that this newsletter is probably rather difficult to get
hold of, but if anyone wants to know any more about our material here,
they are welcome to contact me.
Yours sincerely,
Ursula Sims-Williams
Head of Persian and Iranian language collections

Dear colleagues
on behalf of two researchers from the Department
of Iranian Studies, University of Bamberg, I am searching
for holdings of a weekly Persian newspaper called "habl
al-matin", which was published in British India
(Calcutta) and should not be confused with at least two
other newspapers of the same name, published in Iran. What
I found so far are five different libraries/projects with
diverse holdings:
- The biggest set seems to be in Cambridge
(research results from COPAC, http://copac.ac.uk/)
Title Details: Habl 'al-matin
Publisher: Kalkattah, 1905-1915
Physical Desc.: 11v ; 35cm
Notes: Imperfect set, Weekly
Subject(s): Persian newspapers
Holding Libraries: Cambridge -
L830.a.2.13-
- SOAS has a set of two years:
TITLE Habl al-matin.
IMPRINT Calcutta.
ADD TITLE Habl al-matin.
LIB. HAS Main Library L E Per 9402 Holdings: Vol. 8
-Vol. 9 , 1900-1902.
- If it is the same Habl al-matin from Calcutta (the
catalogue doesn't mention the place of origin, but the years
would fit), Harvard has a set of two different years: Title
Habl al-matin
Microforms (Lamont): Film S 802
HOLDINGS: 12-13 (Sep. 12 1904 - July 27 1906)
- The MEDOC Catalogue of Microform Projects of the
University of Chicago
(http://www.lib.uchicago.edu/e/su/mideast/CatIntro.html)
mentions a holding of one year (1900), which is to be found
in the LoC, too.
Now my (very obvious) questions are:
does anybody know of a complete set of this rare newspaper?
I would suspect the BL, OIOC, to have some holdings as
well, but so far the OIOC have not been incorporated into
their Opac (or is there any progress in sight?).
If there is a more complete holding than the one from
Cambridge, would it be accessible through Interlibrary Loan (I
would guess only, if they have been microfilmed)? If
not, are the holdings of Cambridge accessible through
Interlibrary Loan?
I am thankful for any answer!
Greetings from currently rainy Bamberg
