PEARSON MEMORIAL LECTURE
I am pleased to announce that the Middle East Libraries Committee of the United
Kingdom (MELCOM-UK), in conjunction with the Islamic Bibliography Unit of
Cambridge University Library, has instituted an annual public lecture series as
a memorial to the late Professor J.D. Pearson.
James Douglas Pearson (1911-97) was the founder of _Index Islamicus_,
and one of the most eminent librarians and bibliographers in the field of
Middle Eastern and Islamic studies. He was successively Assistant
Under-Librarian (Oriental Department) at Cambridge University Library;
Librarian of the School of Oriental & African Studies (SOAS), University of
London; and Professor of Bibliography with Reference to Asia and Africa in the
University of London. He was also a founder-member of MELCOM and author of a
number of major reference works in our field.
The Memorial Lectures will be on themes related to Middle Eastern
librarianship and bibliography in the broadest sense. They will normally be
given in July each year before the summer meeting of MELCOM-UK, and as part of
the programme of the annual conference of the British Society of Middle Eastern
Studies (BRISMES), when that is held in the UK.
The First Memorial Lecture will be given on Wednesday 5 July 2000 at
1200 in the Morison Room of Cambridge University Library (West Road, Cambridge).
The speaker will be Paul Auchterlonie of Exeter University Library (Chairman of
MELCOM-UK), and his lecture will be on
"Victorian periodicals and the Middle East"
All who are interested, whether or not they are members of MELCOM, are
cordially invited to attend.
