Subject: Evaluation of Nursing Indexes
Hi- Does anyone know of any comparison studies or statements in respect to
the various nursing indexes- particularly International Nursing Index vs
CINAHL. I am trying to determine which are the best and whether one alone
is good enough. How much overlap vs how many important unique citations
would a second index provide for nurses. How many libraries provide
access to more than one nursing database? Any information would be
appreciated. With respect, Chuck

Subject: Re: Evaluation of Nursing Indexes
First, comparing PubMed/International Nursing Index (INI) and CINAHL is a
bit like comparing apples and oranges, because CINAHL indexes information
in all formats, not just journals. Non-journal formats in the CINAHL
database include books & book chapters, pamphlets, audiovisuals,
accreditation records, codes of ethics, critical paths, dissertations,
research instruments, clinical innovations, drug records, legal cases,
practice acts, government documents (as books or pamphlets), standards,
and websites. The print Cumulative Index to Nursing & Allied Health does
not include , Cochrane records, drug records classification terms, journal
descriptions, legal cases, audiovisuals software, book chapters or website
records. An audiovisual supplement is published approximately every two
years.
The journal coverage in INI is derived from MEDLINE and HealthSTAR (which
are both in PubMed). The print index includes all the nursing titles in
MEDLINE, plus articles from any of the indexed journals pertaining to
nursing retrieved via a subject search strategy. The print INI also
includes separate sections of books and doctoral dissertations, a nursing
thesaurus as a guide to MeSH, and some other unique sections.
The CINAHL thesaurus contains far more nursing terms than MeSH, including
nursing classification terms and nursing theories. These terms are simply
not available in MEDLINE. CINAHL publication types (document types in
some systems) allow limits that are particularly appropriate to nursing
questions, including CEU, teaching materials, consumer/patient teaching
material, and pictorial, to name just a few.
As for journals, the CINAHL database indexes more than 1200 titles in
nursing, allied health, alternative and complementary therapies, consumer
health, and biomedical sciences. This includes almost 500 nursing titles;
MEDLINE includes about 300. One goal of the CINAHL database is to provide
comprehensive coverage of nursing & allied health literature, while
MEDLINE is selective.
Since I began teaching the MLA CE Nursing Information Access in 1986, I
have compiled a Key Nursing Journals chart that compares research
percentage and database coverage for selected English language journals
including all Brandon-Hill nursing journals. Starting last year, the
chart has a column for full-text access, if any. The early 2000 version
is on the web at
http://www.library.kent.edu/nahrs/resource/reports/specrpts.htm .
I am finishing up the 2000 edition which updates the research percentage
column to 1997-99 content and adds some titles. This revised list has 231
titles. 51 titles on this list (22%) are NOT indexed in either MEDLINE or
HealthSTAR; only 2 titles (also in the 51) are not yet indexed in CINAHL.
Many of the titles indexed in CINAHL but not NLM databases are electronic
only journals. MEDLINE indexes just one online nursing journal, the
Online Journal of Issues in Nursing (selected for indexing a year ago but
no records in PubMed). The Key Nursing Journals list includes all nursing
journals available electronically, except for state nursing
journals/newsletters (Journal of the New York State Nurses Association is
included because of relatively high % of research articles, but not their
newsletter).
As soon as I can finish the final 2000 edition, I will send it to the
NAHRS webmaster for posting there. If you really need this information,
let me know, and I'll send to you as a Word file as soon as it is
complete.
The 2001 edition will include several new titles plus a few from recent
published surveys of US and non-US nursing & interdisciplinary titles. If
you have titles to recommend for inclusion, please let me know.
Hope this helps - Peg

Can anyone give me some advice on how to design a customer satisfaction
survey that will be used to evaluate the library collections and services
at a small medical library? It would be helpful if someone could
provide me with examples of surveys they have actually used to assess
services in their own libraries. Any suggestions in this regard will be
greatly appreciated.

Hello all,
Does anyone have or know of anywhere that has a list of the serials
indexed in Index Medicus in a spreadsheet or database format? I'm
dreaming up a new project for myself, and this would make it a lot easier.
I've looked at NLM, all I can find are PDF's, which I can't translate into
Excel.
