The Royal Society of Medicine Press are seeking a successor to Robert Kiley
as Editor of Health Information on the Internet, from the beginning of 2001.
The ideal person will :
* be an information professional involved in helping clinicians to
access health information on the web
* have some experience of writing and editing articles on this subject
* have a good network of contacts for potential contributors to the
journal
The benefits to the Editor include
* the opportunity to take over a successful and highly respected
publication
* high visibility for the Editor and his/her host institution
* the opportunity to make a contribution to knowledge in this
important field
* the opportunity to extend his/her network of contacts in the UK and
elsewhere
Health Information on the Internet (HIOTI) is published by the Royal Society
of Medicine Press in association with the Wellcome Trust. Robert Kiley has
edited the journal from its launch, in February 1998.
HIOTI currently has 525 paid subscribers and has acquired an excellent
reputation. For example, the recent FT survey of health on the net featured
it prominently <http://specials.ft.com/lifeonthenet/health.html>. It has
also been featured as web site of the week in the BMJ, and has been cited in
a number of pieces in the Guardian and Scotsman. It is clear that the impact
of the newsletter extends well beyond the actual number of paying
subscribers.
The publisher's existing contract, which expires at the end of this year, is
with the Wellcome Trust who provide an element of the Editor's time to work
on the journal, in return for their logo on it and a royalty on subscription
income. Robert estimates that each issue occupies a total of about 5 working
days, making a total of 30 days per year. RSM Press pays for and handles all
production, distribution, marketing etc, and makes available £1500 per year
for contributors' fees and a 5% royalty, which in 2001 will amount to around
£1000.
The journal is now online in full text (PDFs with selected highlights in
HTML) and this is hosted by the Wellcome at
<http://www.wellcome.ac.uk/healthinfo> Hosting these pages will move to the
RSM site at the end of the year, or possibly to the host institution of the
new editor. The current HIOTI site has had about 50,000 user sessions over
the last 12 months, 50% from outside the UK, and around 100 institutions
link to the HIOTI web pages. An e-mail annotated table of contents is sent
to around 350 people.
