Dear All,
Here's a little dilemma - a trivial enquiry just suited to a Friday
afternoon.
I have recently moved into the private sector, where many things are
different, and many things are the same ! I have just attended an in-house
email course, where the importance of the legal notice (see bottom of this
email) was impressed upon us - all sorts of fire and damnation is threatened
if we fail to make sure it is included in all our emails (well, a 1000 ps
fine for both individual and company concerned anyway). The origins of this
lie in the Companies Act 1985, where it is a requirement that certain
companies show on all their business correspondence various details,
including their full corporate name, number and registered office address.
This legislation is intended to protect people dealing with UK companies, by
ensuring that they are informed of the true identity of any company issuing
business correspondence.
I was interested in how this applied when sending commands to listservs in
an email message; some systems require you to strip out non-command text. I
have continued to do this, although the virus message (which I have no
control over - this will probably appear along the top of this message !)
still has a habit of creating error messages (especially with mailbase). I
wondered what the legal position was on my doing this. I did wonder whether
the normally unseen internet header information would cover this problem.
This is not something I intend to lose sleep over, as the 'dilemma' has come
about from the unforseen rise in email use rather than blatent disregard for
the law; however, if anyone has any comments, I would be interested to hear
them.
