Dear All,
About 2 months ago, I asked lis-link members for information about
ILT membership in their instutions:
a) which staff groups in your Library/Information service have
applied/are planning to apply for ILT membership?
b) how many of the applicants have been successful?
I had responses from five institutions; University of North London,
Institute of Education University of London, Nottingham Trent
University and two other Universities. Some of these were happy to be
mentioned personally. Respondents included a subject librarian
(Martin Scarrott, UNL), a Student Services Librarian (Gwyneth Price,
IOE), a Deputy Head of Library and Learning Resources, an Information
Specialist and an Academic Liaison Librarian.
Martin Scarrott had gained membership at the end of 1999 and kindly
offered to share his experience with others through a workshop or
other means. Gywneth Price was in the process of applying and was
to encourage other teaching colleagues in Information Services to do
the same. One other had submitted and was waiting to hear. This
librarian knew of one other at her institution who had been
successful. One had 8-10 library staff who were either in the process
of applying or had expressed an interest in doing so. All of these
had subject/user education responsibilities. The final respondent
from NTU didn't know who was applying, but knew that the Subject
Librarians at her institution had the chance to do an in house 1 year
PG Certificate in Higher Education (PGCHE) which was recently
ILT-accredited. This means that those who'd completed the course (six
in number) could submit the joining fee and join the ILT as
completion of the course included the compilation of a portfolio as
required by the ILT.
There was a range of support from institutions for the process; one
allowed individuals to spend 2 days at home to work on the submission
and allowed the librarians to join the university 'programme' along
with academic staff. Another reported that academic colleagues had
encouraged her application and said that her institution was to pay
the cost of application and first year's subscription.
The low response rate was disappointing, and hopefully doesn't reflect
what's happening across the sector. There has been interest in the
original message from Kathy Ennis, Professional Advisor, Academic and
Research Libraries at the Library Association, who is meeting with the
ILT in December. I'll be copying this response to Kathy to enable her
to follow up any leads if she wishes.
Thank you to all those who responded.
