1. MathSciNet
-------------
- the web service from the American Mathematical Society (AMS).
CHEST has, for a number of months, been discussing the provision of a
consortium deal for access to MathSciNet with the supplier AMS.
Unfortunately, despite our best efforts, we have been unable to negotiate
an arrangement that betters that which is already available directly from
AMS. For those members of the HE/FE and Research Council community in the
UK and Republic of Ireland who wish to access this product it is
recommended you refer to the AMS web pages for the latest offers - you
should be aware that you can gain financial benefits if you band together
and act as a consortium. CHEST will maintain a register of those
interested in forming consortia until 31 March 2000. Email
[log in to unmask], with MathSciNet Consortium in the subject line,
and we will put your site into the register and send you back a copy of
the register. It is our understanding that a consortium of only 2 sites
will give some if not all of the consortial benefit. The latest
MathSciNet consortium deal may be viewed via the web at:
http://www.ams.org/bookstore/mathsciprice.html#consortia
and a press release can be viewed at:
http://www.ams.org/new-in-math/press/consort.html
2. ISI BIDS Service
-------------------
Only those institutions that have taken out a licence to access the ISI
Web of Science Service may continue to use the ISI service at BIDS after
31st March until 31st July 2000. If your institution has not taken a
licence to use the Web of Science service at MIMAS your licence expires
on 31st March 2000 and the ISI resource will be removed from your ATHENS
account.
3. Art Index Retrospective
--------------------------
CHEST is pleased to announce that an agreement with H W Wilson will be
signed shortly for the provision of Art Index Retrospective. Further
details will follow but the pricing will be a total payment of £6,600
plus VAT for a three-year agreement, payable either as one lump sum or as
annual payments regardless of when an institution joins the agreement.
The data will be accessed via EDINA and is considered complimentary to
the Art Abstracts service also hosted at EDINA.
4. Arden Online
---------------
CHEST has recently had discussion with The Arden Shakespeare regarding
their product Arden Online. CHEST would like to know whether there is
any call for this product. The following is a description of the resource
taken from their web site at:
http://www.ardenshakespeare.com/ardenonline/default.html
Ardenonline is the Shakespeare online service from The Arden Shakespeare,
providing the world's finest texts of the complete works and much more.
Through licensing agreements with consortia of libraries, and individual
paid subscriptions, Ardenonline brings Shakespeare direct to the desktops
of scholars, teachers, students, directors, actors and all of those who
want access to an in-depth, high-quality resource about the works of the
world's most influential playwright.
Ardenonline contains all of Shakespeare's works, edited to the standard
that has made the Arden Shakespeare famous throughout its 100-year
history. For those plays that have been published in the Arden third
series, Ardenonline also includes a carefully selected and extensive bank
of material for teaching and study, with a particular focus on bringing
the works of Shakespeare alive through performance. As new texts are
published in the Arden third series, so the extra material is added in
for each work.
This offer is likely to be open to all CHEST sites including Public
Libraries and in addition personal licenses may be available.
A free trial is currently available directly from the supplier and this
will be extended for interested academic sites.
Expressions of interest should be addressed to Emma Thompson
<[log in to unmask]> with the subject line of Arden.
5. DATASET Survey by MAU
------------------------
Survey of Dataset Contacts.
The Monitoring and Advisory Unit (MAU) has been asked by the JISC to
survey the opinions of Data Contacts at institutions, and is using the
list of CHEST Data Contacts to reach them. It is vital that the views of
your institution are recorded to plan the future development and
improvements to dataset services, so please try to find time to complete
the questionnaire which may be found at
http://speke.ukc.ac.uk/mau/mau.html#top
The deadline for completion of this document has been extended to 31st
January 2000.
