Library Association Information Services Group (Scotland)
"Evaluating the internet as a research tool"
University of Abertay Dundee, Thursday 18th May 2000, 10.00 - 17.00
After its successful first appearance in November 1999 Information Services
Group (Scotland) is delighted to be able to offer this one day course again.
"The Internet, or the net as it's more often called, is a real bag of
tricks. Some say its like having 100 million consultants on tap free of
charge. You can seek and usually find answers to any questions you have ever
had." (Kennedy 1999)
The internet can be an invaluable tool in the information enquiry process.
In all reference works we must be assured that the information sources used
can be relied upon to give accurate and dependable answers to our users
questions. The reliability of information published in printed reference
works largely comes from editorial control.
"When information is filtered, reviewed, authenticated and
evaluated end users come to trust the source and accept that it is valid and
authoritative." (Netskills)
Unlike most traditional published works, material posted on the internet
does not have to pass through stringent editorial processes. For most
internet pages, on-one has to approve the content prior to publication.
"Evaluating the internet as a research tool" is a one day course which will
(through a mixture of presentations and hands on sessions):
* Guide you through the process of evaluating a range of internet
sources.
* Alert you to a range of quality World Wide Web resources that can
extend the range of sources available to you and your users in the
information enquiry process.
