UNIVERSITY LIBRARY SERVICE : PRESERVATION SERVICES
Survey on conservation of Asian documents : Project Officer
Fixed term post for one year (part-time over a slightly longer period negotiable)
Grade AR2 Salary £19,482-£25,213
The University of Oxford Library Service is seeking a Project Officer to carry out a year-long study funded by the Research Support Libraries Programme. The purpose of the project is to identify ways of improving the preservation and conservation of Asian documents in the UK. The project is a first step in the formulation of a national strategy to preserve these collections for posterity and to ensure their long-term accessibility.
The Project Officer's duties will include assessing the scale of preservation and conservation needs of Asian documents, printed and manuscript, in major UK library collections, gathering information about specialised handling and conservation treatment techniques in the UK and abroad, and identifying conservation problems which require further scientific research. Findings will be presented via a web-site to be set up by the post holder.
The project will run for 12 months (or the equivalent of 12 months full-time over a slightly longer period if negotiated), from a date to be agreed with the successful candidate, preferably early in 2001. The project must finish by 30 June 2002.
Applications are now invited for a Project Officer to carry out this work.
Qualifications, knowledge, skills and experience for this post will include
· knowledge and understanding of the materials and structures of library and archive materials, the reasons for their deterioration and the options for treatment, particularly with regard to Asian documents;
· a library, archive or conservation qualification, or equivalent experience;
· ability to balance attention to detail with a strategic overview;
· previous experience of collection surveys and their application in practice;
· report writing and project planning skills;
· effective communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to communicate effectively in written and spoken English;
· good and proven IT skills, including knowledge and experience of Web use and site design;
· a demonstrable interest in Asian cultures and artefacts will be an advantage.
This is an ideal opportunity for a library, archive or conservation graduate, with collections experience, wishing to further their interest in this specialised area.
The closing date for applications is 29 September 2000.
Interviews will be held in Oxford in the second half of October.
