The BUILDER hybrid library project has just released a number of products,
reports and exemplars:
1. Induction packages
BUILDER has delivered 7 induction packages covering clearly focused aspects
of the hybrid library. Macromedia Flash 4 has been used to provide an
interactive environment, where users can learn at their own pace, with the
click of a mouse. BUILDER has been concerned with introducing hybrid library
concepts to students, and the aim of the induction packages is to provide
interactive training, so that students are equipped with the skills to gain
access to, navigate around, and exploit the information resources within the
hybrid library environment.
Available at: http://builder.bham.ac.uk/induction
Information about how these packages were developed is also available from a
'Find out more' section.
2. Talis Toolbox Demonstrator
BUILDER has been working with TALIS Information to develop a toolbox
providing access to library management system (LMS) information for web
application developers. This toolbox enables new and independent 'web
applications' to be created exploiting the information stored in the LMS
database. These applications are independent of the Talis-provided web
interface (Web OPAC) and enable LMS information to be used in new and
exciting ways.
Demonstrator is available at: http://builder.bham.ac.uk/ttd/
3. A pilot Electronic Short Loan using Higher Education Resources ON-demand
(HERON)
Interested in developing an electronic short loan, or in the electronic
delivery of learning materials? BUILDER has launched a step-by-step guide to
working with HERON, the HE clearing house for copyright clearances and
digitisation of texts. A clickable workflow diagram describes the process
with which BUILDER has been involved since July 1999 in clearing copyright
permissions and receiving digitised texts from HERON to deliver a pilot
electronic short loan service in an institutional context.

4. An evaluation of BUILDER dissemination activities. June 2000
This report will be of interest to project funders and individuals involved
in other similar projects. It concludes that the model used by the BUILDER
team to communicate their experiences, and to monitor and evaluate this
activity, could be very usefully applied elsewhere.

June 2000
This report will be of interest to publishers, particularly in the
humanities area, and all those involved in electronic journals whether as
authors, readers or editors.

"BUILDER aims to develop a working model of the hybrid library within both a
teaching and research context, seamlessly integrating access to a wide range
of printed and electronic information sources, local and remote, using a
Web-based interface, and in a way which will be universally applicable."
BUILDER is supported as part of the Electronic Libraries Programme (eLib)
which is funded by the Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC) of the
Higher Education Funding Councils.
