Apologies for cross posting
ALERT SERVICE PROVIDED FREE TO THE UKFE and UKHE COMMUNITY
The British Library’s inside service is to be made freely available to the
UK and the Republic of Ireland’s academic community. The inside
service is ideal for setting up alerting services which, once set up, are
automatically run by the British Library and e-mailed directly to the users
desk top. It provides access to over 20,000 journals indexed to article
title level and over 70,000 conference papers indexed to paper title level.
Started in 1993 it currently has over 14 million articles indexed. The
database grows by nearly 10,000 records a day. One important feature of
inside is that it provides a current awareness alerting service both for
Table of Contents and for subject specific searches.
Between now and September all institutions can sign up and receive the
inside service immediately. Until September however, each institution will
be allowed a maximum of 10 passwords. Thereafter, the intention is to
allow each institution to set up as many passwords as they wish to allow
the maximum number of people to take advantage of the inside alerting
service.
It has been agreed that the current subscription fees of £500 and
upwards will no longer apply to the Higher education community in the
UK and the Republic of Ireland from July 1st. All institutions that
currently have paid subscriptions will be contacted over the next month
to have their moneys refunded.
A series of major presentations are being organised by the British
Library and MIMAS across the country from September to inform the
academic community about a variety of new information and document
delivery services which are currently being developed in partnership.
This includes the British Library ETOC data being hosted by MIMAS to
deliver free access to HE and FE users. It will be Z39.50 compliant and
will allow access via Athens authentication. The ETOC service at
MIMAS is a JISC supported service. We will also explore Athens access
to the inside alerting service.
