Colleagues,
This "Librarians' salaries" discussion has thrown up a great many
points.
Those who work in the higher education sector in the UK may care
to look at the AUT website at:
http://www.aut.org.uk/
There is a page devoted to professional library staff in the UK
university sector.
All library staff who are paid on the AL grades in the pre-1992
university sector are entitled to join AUT: as are their equivalents
on the Computing, Administrative and "other academically related"
salary scales.
For university library staff in the post-1992 institutions the situation
is more complex. NATFHE (which represents academic staff in the
post-1992 in England & Wales) and EIS-CLA (which does the
same in Scotland) are basically not interested in library, computing
and admin staff. Despite the strictures of the "Bridlington
Agreement", which forbids "poaching" of potential members
between TUC affiliated trade unions, many of these professional
staff in the post-1992 universities have joined AUT, despite their
salaries and conditions being negotiated UK-wide by UNISON.
Within the umbrella of AUT(Scotland) there is a "central group" for
such members from the former Scottish Central Institutions.
At the recent AUT AGM for members from the Library, Computing
and Admin. staffs there were speakers invited from NATFHE, MSF
and UNISON. The latter seemed rather unconcerned about such
staff choosing to join AUT ...
