For many years there was an almost universal perception that librarians are
small grey people who don't do much else besides stamp out books and say
'Sh'! (There was a small column in the LA Record many years ago reporting
that librarians have a grey but worthy image). No one's going to pay much
for that! I have done quite a bot of looking into exactly why this specious
image exists, and I have thoughts about it too complex to go into here, but
nothing specific and direct. Perhaps now we are in the web/computer age our
image will buck up a bit? (Yes, I am an FLA, and also Batgirl, for those
who know what that means!)
