The UK Office for Library and Information Networking (UKOLN) at the
University of Bath currently has vacancies for:

Software Developers (2 posts)
A Technical Research Officer
and an Information Officer

UKOLN is a national centre of expertise for network information management
supporting the library, information and cultural heritage communities. We
are successful in influencing policy regarding the development of new
services to our communities, gaining funding for research and development
projects, building demonstrator systems and services, and providing a range
of information and awareness services. We take a leading role in the UK
library and information communities facilitating consensus-building through
awareness and events services.

UKOLN's staff is multidisciplinary, including software developers, technical
research staff, library professionals and events organisers. We explore all
aspects of network information management and have strong international
contacts in Europe, North America and throughout the world. Our work is
informed by involvement in a range of projects and initiatives and, with the
start of new projects, we are looking for additional development, research
and information services staff. We currently have vacancies for two software
developers, one technical research officer, and an information officer.

Software developers (Ref. no. 00/56)

You will be part of a multi-disciplinary team of software developers and
information specialists working on a range of externally funded projects.
Ability to work within a team and enthusiasm for communicating results are
essential. You will have programming and software design skills and the
ability to work within a UNIX (Solaris) environment using either Perl, C,
C++ or Java programming languages.

You will have the opportunity to work with new and emerging technologies in
information management and web-based systems. Projects underway include
development of metadata registries, a toolkit for subject gateways and a
generic information broker architecture. Contact with project partners and
practitioners will form an important part of the job. Within the University
there will be opportunities to co-operate with research staff within
academic departments. Depending on your interests and experience there will
be potential for involvement in project management.

with investigating solutions for the provision of the infrastructure to
support location, discovery and retrieval of high quality resources over the
Internet. A main focus of UKOLN's work is to promote the provision of
inter-working services across information sectors. You will work closely
with other R&D staff and the Interoperability Focus to enhance understanding
of research issues in this area, participating in a variety of initiatives,
disseminating results and providing input to the distributed systems and
information services staff. Depending on you interests and experience the
opportunity also exists for you to co-ordinate areas of activity.

for the Library community). In addition you will help to develop a new
magazine aimed at the European museums and archives communities and also
