Second Round of Free Modems Scheme
London, 17 August 2000 - Resource: The Council for Museums, Archives and
Libraries has announced the second round of the Technology Baseline Scheme,
which provides free modems to Registered museums.
The Technology Baseline Scheme, in partnership with the National Grid for
Learning, aims to ensure that museums throughout the UK are connected to the
World Wide Web. Ninety one museums received modems in the first round
earlier this year, and another 100 will be distributed in this round.
David Dawson, Senior ICT Adviser at Resource, commented, "With the advent of
the Government's commitment to providing public services through the
Internet by 2005, this scheme plays a vital role in starting to prepare all
museums for the Information Age. The modems will mean that museums can
access the full range of information and resources which the Internet has to
offer."
Museums interested in applying to receive a modem should contact
their Area Museum Council (AMC). Supply is limited and vouchers are
distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. A full list of AMCs and

Resource: The Council for Museums, Archives and Libraries is a new strategic
agency which works with museums, libraries and archives across the UK. It
replaced the Museums & Galleries Commission and the Library & Information
Commission in April 2000. More information can be found at the Resource
