Netskills Workshop:
Multimedia for Online Teaching
A practical 2 day workshop exploring techniques using multimedia and
images for web-based teaching and learning material.
09:30 26th April - 16:30 27th April 2000 University of Newcastle
Multimedia is one of the main factors behind the popularity of the web
for both leisure and education, giving exciting, stimulating and
attractive delivery of a range material. However, a multitude of
techniques exist, ranging from the trivial to the highly complex, and
it is difficult to know where to start, and what is appropriate for
teaching and learning material. This 2 day workshop examines what
multimedia is and what it can offer online education. It explains what
techniques are successfully employed in the delivery of teaching
material, and what benefits to learning are achieved.
Through a mixture of example and practice, a wide range of multimedia
technologies are investigated, with a view to providing both a
comprehensive awareness of what is possible and a practical grounding
in using the techniques.
This practical workshop is aimed at users of the World Wide Web who
have had some experience of creating basic web pages. The workshop
focuses on the issues and practical aspects of designing and creating
multimedia web pages for teaching.
Workshop Content:
The workshop will comprise presentations, demonstrations and
hands-on sessions with opportunities for questions and discussion.
Participants will each receive a workbook which contains workshop
exercises, presentation slides and other relevant materials.
Topics covered will include:

* the use of different image formats, including animated and
transparent GIFs, thumbnails, colour-depth, palette compatibility
and file size/download implications

variety of academic subjects
* created web pages using image formats such as JPEG, GIF - including
animated GIF
* optimised images for web use, including manipulation of
colour-depth, image file-size and the use of thumbnails to reduce
download time
* learned how to convert an image into an image map using standard
HTML
* investigated a variety of multimedia formats and delivery methods in
the context of the web
* included audio and video elements in web pages
