I think this is such an important subject and one that is not easy to deal
with. I hope you will summarise your results for the list.
Here at Swansea, subject librarians will do one on one sessions if asked -
or group sessions if they can get the Dept.s on side. A lot depends upon the
attitude of the individual dept..
Health Sci is a relatively new dept here and their students use electronic
databases (Cinahl & PubMed ) a great deal. Last year a survey was conducted
of staff to assess the neeeds for training. This year we are following that
up by offering a week of sessions (5pm to 6pm)for staff. The sessions are in
the library. Each covers one topic. First was on our new OPAC; second was on
our CDROM network in general; third was on Web of Science; fourth - Cinahl;
5th the Internet.
The response has been very encouraging. About 50% signing up and good
attendances. And appreciative noises ......!

Subject: Library and database training for academic staff
I am interested finding out how other academic libraries promote their
services and, particularly, deliver electronic resource training to their
academic staff. Do you have a formal training programme for academics or
drop-in sessions (and how do you get people to turn up?) or do you mainly do
one-to-one training? Any information would be very helpful, even if it's
only to say you tried something and it didn't work.
I'm also interested in staff development issues connected to delivering
training to all categories of library users. Do you provide in-house
training for library staff involved in teaching library users, or have
library staff attended external courses? I'd be interested in any
information on particularly successful events, internal or external. Thanks,
