At Durham we are starting to look at other suppliers of ILL,
especially for abroad items, in order to cut back on our spending. A
couple of new sources have been suggested to me, and I wonder if anyone
out there has had any practical experience with them?
The first that was mentioned was RLG's SHARES scheme.
http://www.rlg.ac.uk/shares/index.html
As far as I can gather this appears to be mainly American Universities,
although there are one or two UK libraries involved.
Libraries tot up the number of provided items versus the number of
obtained items, you get charged if you are a net borrower and you get paid
if you are a net lender. While this sounds great in theory I wonder if
they are happy to loan overseas? Has anyone tried this? Does a similar
scheme exist in the UK?
Its probably expecting too much, but if anyone has experience of Shares,
do they know how it compares to OCLC as a foreign supplier?
Another possible supplier which was mentioned was UNCOVER. Has
anyone used that either? Do they find it much use, or is its scope too
similar to the paper holdings available in the UK? Whilst it may promise
to be quick, the fact that you have to pay a copyright charge will mean
that we are unlikely to use it in preference to an ILL request to a UK
library.
Any advice would be gratefully received, as would pointers
towards other useful alternative suppliers.
Yours,
Judith Walton
