Colleagues
I have 2 questions which we have been puzzling over and would appreciate any
advice/suggestions from those of you who have already dealt with these
issues. I will summarise responses and post to the list if of interest.
Title changes
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to deal with the problem of a serial
changing its title but not its ISSN? We have in the past just changed the
title in the existing record, made a note in the 500 tag and then used the
780 (preceding entry) tag.
This does mean, however, pretty long notes appearing on the screen which
(with our system), is pretty limited in size already and the record can be
confusing for those users who don't read the notes (of whom there are
many!).
Does anyone have any suggestions that could help us around this problem
particularly as AACR 21.2C1 does recommend a separate main entry for each
variant title + a 503 note tag to explain the variation.
ISSNs in electronic records
Another problem is the question of ISSNs for e-journal entries. Do other
libraries use the ISSN for the print version even if they are only
cataloguing the e-version and, if so, how do they explain in the MARC record
that the ISSN is for the hard copy version?
Thanks
Ewan
