MARGINS Theoretical and Experimental Institute:
Inside the Subduction Factory
Eugene, OR, USA August 20-25, 2000
This short course and workshop, held on the University of Oregon
campus, will bring together petrologists, seismologists, geochemists,
and geodynamicists, in order to address primary problems in the
operation of the subduction factory:
* the relationship between mineral reactions, fluid flow and seismicity
in the slab;
* the dynamics and inter-dynamics of the slab and mantle wedge;
* the location and properties of the melting regime as revealed by
tomography and petrology;
* the flow of material from the slab to the wedge to the arc.
Short Course
The Short Course is for professional researchers and students and will
include 4 days of presentations and discussion and a 1-day field trip
to the volcanoes of the High Cascades. Sessions will explore the slab
and wedge from perspectives of (1) geodynamics (2) observational
geophysics (3) observational geochemistry (4) rheology and (5)
experimental petrology. One day of the Short Course will be devoted to
presentations of current understanding and future prospects for study
of the dynamics and mass fluxes of the Subduction Factory focused study
areas, the Central American and the Izu-Bonin-Marianas arcs.
Confirmed Short Course keynote speakers include: Mike Carr (Rutgers),
Tim Elliott (Bristol), Glen Gaetani (RPI), George Helffrich (Bristol),
Greg Hirth (WHOI), John Holloway (ASU), Shun Karato (Minnesota), Chris
Kincaid (URI), Charlie Langmuir (Lamont), Simon Peacock (ASU), Robert
Stern (UT Dallas), Rob van der Hilst (MIT), and Doug Wiens
(Washington).
Workshop
Following the Short Course, there will be a one day Workshop in which
participants will update and improve the science implementation plan
for the Subduction Factory and germinate multidisciplinary initiatives.
The workshop will emphasize defining the relationship between the
overall goals of the Subduction Factory's focused field experiments and
the needed laboratory and theoretical progress that must accompany
those experiments.
Institute Conveners: Geoff Abers (Boston), John Eiler (Caltech), Karen
Fischer (Brown), Marc Hirschmann (Minnesota), Chris Kincaid (URI), and
Terry Plank (Boston). Host Committee Chair: A. Dana Johnston
Applications to attend the institute should be submitted to the MARGINS
Office by April 15, 2000. Funds to defray partial travel costs of U.S.
participants are available. The MARGINS Steering Committee will
evaluate applications and make recommendations, including award of
travel funds, in May. Those wishing to apply (including students)
should send a one-page e-mail message to
[log in to unmask] containing (1) address and contact
information, including web site, (2) description of research interests,
and (3) statement of potential contributions to the meeting. Inquiries
may be addressed to the MARGINS Office or directly to the conveners
