All - the abstract deadline for GeoCanada 2000, which includes an
anticipated 2 day session entitled 'The future in petrology', has been
extended FROM Jan. 7, 2000 TO Jan. 31, 2000.
A previous message describing this session is provided below.
Apologies to people who get multiple copies of this message.
THE FUTURE IN PETROLOGY
Special session to be held as part of the GeoCanada 2000 meeting
(sponsoring societies: Min Assoc Can, Geol Assoc Can, and several others)
CALGARY, MAY 29 - JUNE 2, 1999.
Convenors of 'The future in petrology':
David Pattison, U Calgary, [log in to unmask]
Dante Canil, U Victoria, [log in to unmask]
Greg Dipple, UBC, [log in to unmask]
DESCRIPTION:
'The future in petrology' session is concerned with two main themes:
(1) new directions in the study of igneous and metamorphic rocks; and
(2) the future role of igneous and metamorphic petrology within geoscience.
The 'new directions' category is largely discipline-based, and focuses on
'new directions' that may be conceptual and/or technology-driven. The
'future role' category is broader, and is intended to explore the issue of
the evolution of petrology as a stand alone scientific discipline versus
its application in support of other endeavours in geoscience. We will group
contributions according to the two themes. The aim is for this to be a 1.5
- 2 day session with posters and other oral papers, and 6 keynote speakers
we are in the process of confirming.
We are open minded about producing a special publication based on this
session, but have no plans for one now. Much will depend on the response to
the session, and on the tone and mood of the session itself.
There will be two related field trips. The first trip, scheduled to run
before the meeting (Note: NOT after the meeting, as incorrectly advertised
in the first circular), will examine plutonism and metamorphism in the
Valhalla Complex, SE B.C., led by Sharon Carr and Phil Simony. The second
trip, scheduled to run after the meeting, will examine metamorphic rocks of
the southern Omineca crystalline belt, SE B.C., led by Ed Ghent, Phil
Simony and Jim Crowley. There will be also be several other trips which
examine volcanic, plutonic and metamorphic rocks as part of a wider field
trip theme.
