Brief for the WMRMC pilot project - Informal Learning in Museums
Contact: Emma Hawthorne,

T: 01527 872258, [log in to unmask]
Context:
In August 2000 WMRMC published Fast Forward, its vision for museum
development in the region.
This document is supported by qualitative analysis of each museum's
provision in terms of type of collections, collections care and public
access.
As part of this process range statements* were developed to assess how
museums are catering for formal and informal learners. Analysis of this
survey work reveals that many small museums are struggling to develop their
educational role.
This pilot project aims to address this by exploring how small museums can
provide learning opportunities for family groups (any group of adults and
children visiting the museum).
*all information about the range statements and survey work of Fast Forward
can be sent on request.
The brief:
WMRMC is looking for a consultant to:
Work with 3 - 4 museums in the West Midlands to assess their current
provision for family groups
Develop, in consultation with museum staff, some low-tech, interactive
resources for the museum. These resources will enable family groups to
better understand and enjoy the museum displays as well as stimulate
interaction between group members
Work with the staff and volunteers of the museum to pilot mock-ups of the
resources with users
Draw up some brief guidelines, disseminating the lessons learned from the
project, to help other museums cater for family groups
Manage the production of the final set of interactives/resources
Budget:
A total of ?10,000 is available for this project. This budget will include
the
consultant's fee, all expenses and all the costs of the
interactives/resources.
Written expressions of interest to be submitted by Monday 27th November
2000.
