The Disability Discrimination Act, 2004

This half day workshop organised by GEM (North East) and NEMS aims to help
museums, galleries, libraries, archives and historic buildings respond to
the recently published draft Code of Practice for the Disability
Discrimination Act. This final stage of the DDA comes into force in 2004 and
will require service providers to make further improvements to remove
physical barriers which prevent a disabled person from accessing a facility
or service. This affects all venues open to the public.

The workshop will outline the main components of the Code of Practice and
explain the steps that service providers need to take to comply with the law
by 2004. The workshop will offer people practical examples of the many ways
in which museums and galleries can make cost-effective improvements to their
buildings or services in order to comply with the Act. There will also be an
opportunity to discuss the issues surrounding access to your particular
site. 2004 may seem a long way off, but it is essential to plan now for the
permanent solutions that the Act may require you to make.
