Subject: For moderation - museum exhibition
UK immigration museum exhibition
Dear Colleague
I thought you might find this of interest - do pass it on, especially
to
refugee community groups or those not on email.
Thanks

>From Refugees to Citizens
The Minister for Immigration Barbara Roche has called for a 'grown-up
debate' on immigration (Monday 11 September 2000). In London's East
End
that debate has started, with a children's cross-cultural project on
the
refugee and migrant history of Britain.
People have for centuries arrived here with little, had a tough time,
and
come through to become part of our society and to bring new ideas,
experiences and contributions of many kinds. That story is told in a
remarkable exhibition,in a unique immigrant site, in the heart of the
most
ethnically diverse of all Britain's boroughs.
Suitcases and Sanctuary is the first exhibition held at Britain's
first
museum of immigration, told through the eyes of today's children,
many
first and second generation newcomers themselves. They tell us about
the
Huguenots, refugees fleeing persecution and massacre in France 350
years
ago, the people who brought the very word refugee into the English
language. They tell us the story right up to the present day Somali
community, still arriving here.
The Museum would like to welcome - without charge - all groups of
recent
refugees and newcomers to Britain. Please visit us.
Exhibition open from 12 until 7pm, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays
and
Sundays. Also open Saturday 23 September. Last day 8 October. Other times
for groups by special arrangement.
