Dear List Members,
Below is an update of several new periodical issues and information on
resources available for locating the full texts of magazine articles on the
web.
1. Periodicals' update
Conflict Trends Magazine, June 2000 (full-text)
- Published by ACCORD, this issue
(http://www.accord.org.za/publications/ct6/issue6.htm) focuses on security
in Africa and the impact of mercenaries on conflict. Also includes
conflict-related news and book reviews.
International Journal of Refugee Law, vol. 12, no. 1, 2000 (table of
contents)
- This newly published issue includes articles (e.g., on Bihari refugees,
refugee lawyers in Sweden, the Greek Appeals Board), cases, and documents.
Go to http://www3.oup.co.uk/reflaw/hdb/Volume_12/Issue_01 for more details.
Refugee Survey Quarterly, vol. 18, no. 4, 1999 (table of contents)
- The last issue of each volume of RSQ reproduces documents from the most
recent Executive Committee (EXCOM) session; this one includes reports from
the 50th session held in October 1999. It also features an Internet
resource section with descriptions of web sites for a variety of UNHCR's
partner organizations. For a detailed table of contents, go to:
http://www3.oup.co.uk/refqtl/hdb/Volume_18/Issue_04
Refugees Magazine, no. 119 (full-text)
- Focuses on the asylum debate in North America. The issue is posted in
.pdf format at http://www.unhcr.ch/pubs/rm119/rm119all.pdf and is somewhat
slow to load.
Revista de la OIM Sobre Migraciones en America Latina, vol. 18, no. 1, 2000
(full-text)
- Full-text available at http://www.oim.web.cl/181/TABLA.htm. The issue
includes details of upcoming seminars, ongoing projects, relevant web sites
and academic study programs, and bibliographic references to recent
literature.
2. Searching full-text articles on the web
In addition to subject-specific periodicals, more general news magazines can
also serve as a useful source for discussions relevant to the forced
migration community. Below is a list of several services that index the
full texts of articles across the web.
Britannica - http://www.britannica.com
- This site allows you to search not only for entries in the Encyclopedia
Britannica, but also for the full text of selected magazine articles. A
general search on "refugees" produced articles and blurbs from a diverse
range of titles, e.g., USA Today Magazine, Public Health Reports, and
Architecture, among others. The downside is that the most recent articles
dated from January 2000.
E-revue - http://www.e-revue.com
- This service indexes articles from both the French- and English-language
press. It's the most current of the article locating services mentioned
here; however, it does not appear to archive texts older than about a week.
FindArticles - http://www.findarticles.com
- This service offers users a pool of 300+ full-text magazine and journal
titles to search in. A general search on +refugees +2000 yielded 44 hits,
with at least one relevant article dating from June.
InfoJump - http://www.infojump.com
- This service indexes 4,000 publications, a number of which are in other
languages besides English (see especially under the "Newspapers" category).
A general search on "refugees" in the Newspapers category for articles
published in 2000 produced 82 hits. However, the most current reference
dated from March. The strength of this site is its sophisticated search
engine and its sort options for viewing results.
MagPortal - http://magportal.com
- This service indexes fewer magazine titles than FindArticles, but articles
tend to be more current; you can order search results by the date that the
article was found by MagPortal. A general search on "refugees" produced 125
hits, with over 20 dated in July.
Does anyone know of other similar search services, particularly for
non-English-language media?
