	  FIRST CALL FOR PAPERS

	  FINITE-STATE PHONOLOGY : SIGPHON 2000
Fifth Meeting of the ACL Special Interest Group
	  in Computational Phonology

	  A full-day workshop held at
	  COLING 2000
	  Luxembourg, 6 August 2000

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION

The workshop will focus on the growing role of finite-state methods in
computational phonology. Excellent papers in other areas of computational
phonology are also welcome.

Sample topics:

* Finite-state formalizations of phonological frameworks
* Algorithms and theorems about finite-state phonological formalisms
* Embedding finite-state phonology in NLP or speech systems
* The application of finite-state methods to empirical description
(including difficulties, representational encodings, and software
	tools)
* Phonologically motivated extensions to finite-state techniques
* Research bearing on whether the finite-state assumptions are
   empirically adequate or computationally necessary

A principal goal of the workshop is to bring together researchers who are
working in different phonological frameworks:

Finite-state methods have been more-or-less persuasively applied to a
range of frameworks, from derivational approaches to Optimality Theory.
This shared formal underpinning exposes crucial differences among the
frameworks (Frank & Satta 1998), and also suggests deep similarities
(Karttunen 1998).

We hope that the workshop's focus on formalizations using finite-state
techniques, which are well understood in themselves, will facilitate
further discussion of the theoretical and empirical virtues of different
frameworks. We are particularly interested in the potential for new or
hybrid frameworks.

Linguistic theory, Speech and Language pathology, Speech therapy

FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT AND CALL FOR PAPERS

Padova 22th - 26th August 2000

The Department of Linguistics of the University of Padua is pleased to
announce a conference on the relevance of Linguistics in Speech and
Language Pathology and in Speech therapy. Our aim is to explore the
interdisciplinary complexity of the interface language/cognition and
evaluate the relevance of linguistic theory in the development of
cognitive science; to discuss general problems posed by different
analyses; to bring under scrutiny theoretical assumptions taken for
granted in recent analyses, which may not be so obvious as they seem; to
investigate how even apparently minimal choices in the description of
phenomena may affect the form and complexity of the interface; and to
stress the theoretical and methodological relevance of the tools developed
in this area by focusing on empirical data of different languages. We
encourage submissions of papers dealing with any aspect of Speech and
language pathology in relation to any area of linguistics: phonetics,
phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics, language
acquisition, language change, sign language, bilingualism,
sociolinguistics, neurolinguistics, cognitive grammar, generative grammar,
etc. We welcome submissions of proposals for

PAPERS & POSTERS

Abstracts should be as specific as possible and include a statement of the
author's topic or problem, approach and conclusions.
Authors interested in presenting a paper should submit one copy of a
one-page abstracts (plus one-page for references). Please send a separate
cover page with the following information:

1. Name & affiliation.
2. Title of paper/poster.
3. Mail address
4. E-mail address
5. Phone and/or Fax number
6. Audiovisual needs
7. Status (faculty, graduate student)

THEME SESSIONS

Theme sessions are encouraged. They are organized by an individual and
submitted as a unit. They are intended to deal with a unified idea or
topic, whether from similar or diverse viewpoints. Talks should be on a
coherent topic within the conference themes that can be expected to
generate opposing views and discussion with a broader audience. Theme
sessions will normally include 3 or 4 papers, plus a brief introduction.
Papers should be distributed in advance among participants and
participants are invited to refer to each other's approaches. Each panel
can accommodate introductory remarks framing the issues and three to four
30-minute talks. Proposals for Theme sessions should include:

  - an overall abstract, outlining the topic and nature of the theme
session as a whole
  - a short abstract from each presenter
The form of the abstract for the theme session, and for each included
paper, is the same as that for regular abstracts.

Please send the following information on a separate cover page:
1. Topic/Title of the Theme Session.
2. Name & affiliation of organizer
3. Names & affiliations of presenters
4. Mail address

EPSRC STUDENTSHIP: SPEECH AND LANGUAGE PROGRAMME
DEPARTMENT OF LINGUISTICS, UNIVERSITY OF CAMBRIDGE

Applications are invited for an EPSRC quota award research studentship
leading to a Ph.D., to start in October 2000. The award can be held
full-time over 3 years. The research studentship can be held in any area
of speech or language processing that falls within the remit of EPSRC
funding and is related to our current research activities.

The Department holds two EPSRC grants:
- The role of systematic fine phonetic detail in synthesizing speech that
sounds natural and is robust in adverse listening conditions. (Dr. Sarah
Hawkins)
- The role of systematic fine phonetic detail in spoken word
recognition. (Dr. Sarah Hawkins)

The first of these also includes scope for research on:
- Design of perceptual tests to evaluate the quality of synthetic speech,
especially its intonation.
Other relevant research in the department is in:
- English intonation. (Dr. Francis Nolan)
- Cross-linguistic study of conceptualisation. (Dr. Kasia Jaszczolt)

Applicants should have a class I or II:1 degree in a relevant area
(normally including phonetics, psychology, or computational linguistics),
or a Masters degree with relevant research experience.

Full studentships include a basic maintenance award and are available to
British applicants and those with 3 years qualifying residence in the UK
(excluding full time education). Tuition fees and college fees are paid
direct to the university and your college, respectively. The maintenance
award is paid to the student. It is currently of 6,620 p.a., and will
probably increase by about 2.5% before October. Additional maintenance
allowances are available to students above 26 years of age, or if you have
sole financial responsibility for children (single parents). A Tuition fee
studentship without a maintenance allowance would be available to EU
residents.

You may wish to consult our Departmental Web site

ISCA, The International Speech Communication Association, (formerly ESCA):

     http://www.isca-speech.org/home.html

has just approved the creation of SProSIG: a Special Interest Group (SIG)
on Speech Prosody.

The creation of SProSIG was supported by 72 founder members from 23
different countries (Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Finland,
France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, Poland,
Portugal, Singapore, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Thailand, UK,
 USA, Venezuela).

Membership of the group is open to anyone with a scientific interest in
research on the prosody of human speech. Elections will be held during
the coming year to nominate officers. Until the first elections the
following acting officers have been nominated:

     Chairman: Daniel Hirst
     Secretary: Bernard Bel
     Liaison officer: Nick Campbell

The aims of SProSIG are to promote the study and diffusion of knowledge
about Speech Prosody in general in a number of ways, including:

 + dedicated web pages
 + a regular email Newsletter
 + a bibliographic database
+ organisation of workshops on specific themes
+ helping to co-ordinate sessions on prosody in International meetings
 (Interspeech, Eurospeech, ICPhS, ICL etc.)

It is also hoped that the International nature of the SIG will provide a
means for diffusing information both to and from the different language
communities involved in research on various languages.

				RESOURCES
			   *******************

Dear Colleague,

As a fellow Speech Pathologist or language/literacy specialist, I invite
you to visit eLr ("Extra Language Resources"), an interactive resources
Web site, http://www.elr.com.au . A free trial is available at
http://www.elr.com.au/elrtrial.htm via a temporary registration (you may
request another any time you wish).

eLr currently has over 2,000 separate interactive activities, each
comprising multiple items, covering some 425 target areas in Phonology,
Phonemic Awareness and Reading and Spelling. New activities are
continually being prepared - for example, we are currently working on
Semantics, which will include additional activities for acquired (aphasia)
and developmental language disorders. The eLr site features both PCS and
COMPIC pictographs, as well as many text based exercises.

This site and all activities have been produced by myself (Toni Seiler)
and Anna Breakell (practicing Speech Pathologists) and my husband Rob
Seiler, a computer programmer. Our aim is to provide speech, language and
literacy specialists, teachers and parents with a comprehensive set of
resources which can be accessed anywhere directly from the Web.

Subscribers to the site are able to open each specific task(s) from an
on-line, goal orientated Directory, and are also able to provide their own
clients free "Guest" access to enable home practice. All users have
immediate access to new materials or revisions as they occur.

To use eLr, you will need MS Internet Explorer (version 4.1 or higher) for
Windows as the eLr site relies extensively on dynamic HTML features that
other browsers and operating systems do not yet offer. To get a better
understanding of our design principles and clinical usage we suggest you
also read -

"eLr Design Principles" - http://www.elr.com.au/support/design.htm "Hints
for using eLr" - http://www.elr.com.au/support/elrhints.htm and "FAQ's" -
http://www.elr.com.au/support/elrfaq.htm

We would welcome any feedback and please feel free to add a link to eLr on
your site if you wish.

Thank you
