Also mainly on your second question:
In a Dutch (which you probably do not read?) article on this issue, I read
that Michael Birnbaum (US) will soon be publishing a book on running
experiments on the internet.
The article also referred to two sites on the web:
www.psych.unizh.ch/genpsy/Ulf/Lab/WebExpPsyLab.html
and
xp.kyb.tuebingen.mpg.de/web-experiment/encoding/index.html
But even if psychologists/researchers in other domains have tested issues of
validity and reliability it probably remains the questions just how much and
what exactly we as environmental psychologists can learn from experiments
that are run in highly variable and completely unknown (or even virtual)
environments.
Interesting issue...

Regarding your second question, my advisor recently bought a new book that
might be of interest to you. I haven't looked at in depth, but it's by
Dillman, so it seems like it should be a good source.
Mail and Internet Surveys: The Tailored Design Method (Second Edition)
Don A. Dillman. John Wiley & Sons. New York. 2000.
