"Analysis of Problems in Settlement and Consolidation"
Houston, Texas, USA - 13 & 14 June 2000
A 2-day short course with hands-on computer sessions
****************************************
Learn how to combine the power of SPREADSHEETS with numerical methods to
solve real-world problems dealing with stress distribution, settlement,
pore pressure development, and consolidation.
****************************************
The short course is intended for practicing engineers looking for practical
design tools and methods. Participants need to have had at least one
course in soil mechanics and a basic knowledge of spreadsheets; however,
advanced functions are discussed in the course. The course is a practical,
application-oriented program that provides a review of basic concepts in
settlement and consolidation before moving on to advanced topics. Topics
include an introduction to numerical methods; stress distribution solutions
for embankments, shallow footings, and deep foundations; loads varying with
time; multi-dimensional drainage conditions; pore pressure development in
soil; 2 and 3-dimensional loading conditions; large strain consolidation
analysis for soft sediments and dredge fills; moving drainage boundaries;
and the effect of partial saturation on pore pressures and consolidation.
Each day of the course is divided into lecture and computer sessions during
which the participants examine example spreadsheets illustrating approaches
to analyzing problems of increasing complexity. The course includes a set
of notes, technical papers, example problems, and a computer diskette with
copies of numerous spreadsheets discussed during the course, including
solutions to the example problems. The intent is for the participants to
gain a better understanding of the technical concepts, along with
practical, cost effective methods of analysis. Microsoft EXCEL is the
spreadsheet used for the course, but solutions are also available in
Quattro-Pro.
