Subject: Information Society Teaching Symposium
8 September 2000
Dear Cybersociety Friends
Would anyone be interested in participating in a symposium on 'Teaching the
Information Society', in mid-May 2001, in Edinburgh? (This would be likely
to run on a Friday so people could stay over in Scotland for the weekend if
they wish!!).
I am aware that some of you teach courses or modules (or part-modules) on
the information society (ie the social, economic, and political impact of
information: Daniel Bell and all that jazz). I have personally found it
quite a challenging subject to teach, because it is so interdisciplinary,
subject to so many conflicting theories, such a fast-moving area, etc. I
believe that a focused, workshoppy-type meeting of interested people would
help us to learn from one another.
What I have am organising is a day-long symposium, with sessions (brief
invited paper followed by open discussion) on the following themes:
Session One: The syllabus for Information Society Studies
Session Two: Teaching methods and media in information society instruction
Session Three: Assessment methods in information society instruction
The ceiling on delegates would be 30 persons and the cost per delegate would
have to be in the region of £55.
Please email me back if you are interested in talking further about this.
Thanks so much.
