I'm forwarding this to the list because it should be of interest to
many members, not least because the effect of short-term research
contracts on the position of women in science and engineering is
explicitly discussed in this high-profile government report (and the
reduction of such short-termism is one of the main policy
recommendations). Other relevant aspects concern working conditions
and institutional policies within universities.

I took part in some of the online debate, and I think the report is
fair and well-balanced, although as you might expect it misses out
some of the more lively comments and strong complaints.

The report on the Women in Science, Engineering and Technology on-line
consultation has now been published. A summary has been circulated to
MPs and Lords, and the full report sent to stakeholders such as the
Research Councils.

It is available on the consultation web site in html format or pdf
format at:

http://www.mailbase.ac.uk/lists/hansard/files/report.html

or

http://www.mailbase.ac.uk/lists/hansard/files/report.pdf

The PDF version is 20 pages.

Both the four page summary and the full report are also available at
the Parliamentary Office of Science and Technology web site (click on
"Links to on-line reports and briefing notes"):

http://www.parliament.uk/post/report.htm

The Athena project and Women in Higher Education Register are working
on taking forward the recommendations made during the discussion. If
you wish to be involved, please email Caroline Fox at [log in to unmask]

Thank you very much for all your interesting and useful contributions
to the debate.
